The UN General Assembly has declared December 11, starting in 2003, as International Mountain Day. This decision is a result of the success of the International Year of Mountains, marked in 2002, at the suggestion of the UN, as it helped raise global awareness of the importance of mountains, establish national committees in 78 countries, strengthen alliances by promoting the International Partnership for Sustainable Development in mountain areas, known as “Mountain Partnership” (World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, 2 September 2002).

Mountains, with as much as 70% of all drinking water, are home to as much as 25 percent of plant and animal species, but also to every tenth inhabitant of the planet. That is why the International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness of the importance of mountains for human life, but also for the life of the entire living world in general.

The celebration of this day emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries in the exploitation of mountain areas as well as encouraging the creation of partnerships that will bring positive changes to forests and mountains.
