World Heart Day is a social event that has been celebrated worldwide every year since 2000 with the aim of raising public awareness that cardiovascular disease and death can be prevented by introducing healthy lifestyles and in that way productive years of life of the working population would be prolonged, the cost of treatment and economic consequences reduced. Every year, 17.1 million people die of heart and blood vessel diseases in the world, which puts this cause of death at the forefront.
World Heart Day was introduced to increase knowledge about risks and improve prevention measures. Therefore, for example, on September 29, 2011, the World Heart Day was celebrated under the slogan “One world, one home, one heart”, and in 2019 under the slogan “Be a hero of your heart”.
The World Heart Federation, together with its members, points out that 80% of premature deaths due to heart disease and stroke can be prevented by controlling several significant risk factors – including; smoking, improper diet and physical inactivity. Cardiovascular diseases cause 29% of all deaths in the world, making them “the world’s number one killer”.
